Chapter Seven

Anna’s Nightmare

Anna And Darren’s Home On Isla Paraísa, Location: Off The Coast Of Florida, United States, Year: 2005

While Darren makes his way to frigid Alaska, Anna returns to domestic life on the quiet and tepid—more like humid—life on a slice of island off the coast of Florida, Isla Paraísa. Dana is staying one more night at her friend’s house, and Anna has until the next morning to settle in and get things back in order at home. Yet she cannot focus on that. All she can think about is Darren’s hike. She has never known for certain what these solo hikes are about, but she has a pretty good idea and is expecting to get a call from Agent Publicover at any moment now that she has returned from her vacation.

She sighs and props her suitcase against the wall before plopping down on the couch.

He’s going to get himself killed, she thinks, rubbing her temples. If he’s taken something, I can’t protect him….

Her thoughts trail off as she remembers her own trespasses against the shadow government. Darren knows about the genetic engineering files—she had shown them to him almost a decade ago—but she has done more that he somehow has not discovered yet. Her mind wanders to the floppy disks that she had hidden in the ceramic dog Dana used to love to play with as a child. The information on there is enough to get her, Darren, and probably Dana killed if anyone finds out that she has them. For his own good, she hasn’t told Darren about them, let alone where she has hidden them.

That’s why he’s still keeping secrets from me, she supposes. But I can’t help him if I don’t know what’s going on. Then again, that might be the only way I can help our family, plausible deniability. I just hope that he knows what he’s doing.

Anna shakes her head. Nothing she can do about it right now. All she can really do is unpack and go about her day as normal while praying that nothing will actually happen to disrupt it. She would be thinking that life was much simpler before she and Darren got married or before she had joined CIA, but she knows it’s not true. Life has never been simple or normal for her, for her family, and there is no reason for that to change now.
